7 Hermetic Principles

The Hermetic Principles are a set of seven philosophical and metaphysical concepts articulated in the “Kybalion,” a book published in 1908 by three individuals known as “The Three Initiates.” These principles are said to reflect the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus, a legendary figure who is considered a synthesis of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. The principles are:

  1. The Principle of Mentalism: The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental. This principle suggests that everything that happens has its origin in the mind and that the universe itself is a mental creation of the All (the infinite and unknowable source of everything).
  2. The Principle of Correspondence: As above, so below; as below, so above. This principle highlights the interconnectedness between different levels of reality, suggesting that patterns repeat across the macrocosm (the universe) and the microcosm (individuals).
  3. The Principle of Vibration: Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates. According to this principle, everything in the universe is in a constant state of motion and vibration, with different frequencies determining different states of matter and energy.
  4. The Principle of Polarity: Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites. This principle asserts that everything has its opposite, and that opposites are identical in nature but different in degree.
  5. The Principle of Rhythm: Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall. This principle describes the natural flow of events and energies, emphasizing the cyclical nature of life and the universe.
  6. The Principle of Cause and Effect: Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause. This principle states that nothing happens by chance and that every action has a corresponding reaction, which is the basis of causality.
  7. The Principle of Gender: Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles. This principle suggests that gender exists in everything, with masculine and feminine energies present in all aspects of life and creation.

These principles form the foundation of Hermetic philosophy, emphasizing the interconnectedness and underlying unity of all things in the universe. They are used as a guide for understanding the nature of reality and for personal spiritual development.
